How long will my appointment take?

Your appointment will likely take 1 - 2 hours. This allows for dilation, testing, visit with Dr. Ells and any necessary treatments.

Can I bring someone with me to the appointment?

We encourage that you bring a family member or friend with you. Often there is a great deal of information to comprehend or treatment decisions to make.

Can I drive after my appointment?

It is necessary for your eyes to be dilated in order to be examined by Dr. Ells. Normally, your eyes will remain dilated for 2 to 4 hours and therefore, we recommend that you have a driver with you.

Where can we park?

A large parking lot with free parking is available at the Southern Alberta Eye Centre, 5340, 1st Street S.W. and Calgary Retina Consultants is on the 2nd floor.

Can you provide me with a prescription for new glasses?

No, Dr. Ells does not provide prescriptions for glasses. Refraction can be obtained from an optometrist.

What types of patients does Dr. Ells see?

Dr. Ells only sees patients with conditions of the retina. These include patients with diagnoses such as age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity or retinal tears.

Does Dr. Ells perform Laser Refractive Surgery (PRK, LASIK)?

No, the laser treatments done by Dr. Ells are for the treatment of retinal conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, etc.

Do you need a referral to see Dr. Ells?

Yes, a referral from an ophthalmologist, optometrist, family doctor or specialist is required. Referrals can be faxed to Calgary Retina Consultants at 403-286-6819.

What do I do if I am a patient of Dr. Ells and I have an emergency?

You are encouraged to contact the office Monday - Friday 0800 - 1600 hours at 403-286-6802. Please do not email if you are having an emergency. After hours, you should proceed to the Emergency Dept at Rockyview Hospital for urgent care.

What should I bring to my appointment?

  • Alberta Health Care Card (or provincial health card if from other province)
  • List of medications presently taking
  • All corrective glasses or lenses
  • Any medications that you may require to take during your appointment
  • If you are a diabetic, bring a snack and any medications you require
  • As your eyes will be dilated when you leave your appointment, bring sunglasses for your comfort, as you may be sensitive to light.
